Scam alert: Calls may be copying an SCTI number
We’ve received reports of scam callers displaying our phone number 09 979 6597 when calling members of the public. These calls are not coming from SCTI.
Unfortunately, some scammers can copy (or ‘spoof’) a trusted organisation’s phone number so it appears on your caller ID even when it isn’t a legitimate call.
What to do if you receive a call
- Do not share passwords, PINs, one-time codes, or banking details.
- If the caller claims to be from SCTI (or calls from 09 979 6597) and you are unsure, hang up.
- Call us back using our official numbers: 0800 800 571 (NZ) or +64 9 979 6593 (from overseas). You can also email us at [email protected].
- If you’ve already provided information or made a payment, contact your bank immediately and report the incident to your mobile provider.
- If possible, note the time of the call and what was said, and share this with us when you contact our team.
- You can also contact your phone company and let them know, and/or block the number.
What we’re doing
We have investigated internally and with our phone company and, at this stage, have no evidence the calls are originating from our phone system.
Because caller ID number copying occurs outside our network, we have limited ability to prevent third parties from misusing our number. We have reported the issue to Netsafe and we are working with our partners and authorities to help limit any further misuse.
If you have any questions or concerns at all, please call us on 0800 800 571 in New Zealand or +64 9 979 6593 (from overseas). You can also email us at [email protected]. We are here to help.
We will update this page if there are any changes you need to know about.
Stay safe and keep your data safe.
